Stomach Flu

Some people believe in a so called “stomach flu”. Actually the stomach flu has much in common with usual kind of flu. As for the doctors they say that stomach flu doesn’t exist, it is not some different kind of flu but common flu with the expressed symptoms of digestive disorder.

As usual it starts in the same way as a common flu. Ill person has high temperature, shiver, headache etc (this period is called incubatory period). Patient can have such symptoms for 1-2 days. But later he has the syndrome of digestive disorder. He loses his appetite, has coated and dry tongue, suffers from sickness, stomachache, sometimes he can vomit, have constipation, diarrhea (as usual it happens seldom and is caused not by a virus of flu but the reason of it can be some other infections) etc. As usual it’s children who can have such symptoms. But adults can suffer from stomach flu as well.
Sometimes ill person can even have symptoms similar to appendicitis. In such case he can be even taken to hospital with the diagnosis of appendicitis. As usual after a period of 1-2 days patient feels better even if his temperature can stay high.
What is the reason of digestive disorder during the flu? Can such symptoms be caused by the virus of flu? Actually the flu is a respiratory illness and if you have symptoms of stomach flu they can be caused by virus, germ or parasite infection. The reason of such symptoms can also be the intoxication of vegetative part of the nervous system.
As for the treatment of stomach flu you need some special medicine which can be prescribed by doctor. But at the same time the illness needs traditional treatment which is usually done in the case of common flu. But the patient should never practice self-treatment, because flu is rather dangerous illness.

 Re: Stomach Flu
I remember when I would have the stomach flu,
my Mom would always see that I had ginger ale
beverage and crushed ice, and saltine crackers.
She felt that the saltine crackers would help
take in some of the infection/poison that was
in my body. She also fed me (when feeling a little better) dry toast, mashed bananas and
apple sauce. I believe there is a saying BRAT
which I guess means bananas, rice, and apple sauce and toast is good for diarrhea symptoms when one gets to feeling better before one takes in more solid food, etc.
I do agree that the stomach flu can be serious. The dehydration alone is dangerous. A high fever also can come because of dehydration. The crushed ice helps a lot and some hot tea perhaps. The sodas need to cause some dehydration so they should not be a part of the treatment unless a sip or two.
I had the stomach flu way back in 1974 and had to be admitted to the hospital in which I had to take a big swallow and the tube went down and
was hooked up to a machine where the poison came into that machine from my body. It was not good.
Sometimes people get confused about food poison and the stomach flu. I believe the food poisoning symptoms come on fairly soon, I believe. I had a doctor and a friend of our family for years believed that one of the best drugs that can be give is Bactrim (of course that is if the person is not allergic to sulfa). He believed that the germ should be killed. He always felt like there was a germ that caused the stomach flu.
So many parents today ignore the stomach flu especially in their children. This is not a good idea at all.
I had a friend who had the stomach flu so horribly, but she did not take it seriously.
She tried to go to food after having very low
blood sugar (because she had not eaten in a long while) that when she tried to eat she aspirated on the food (so the officials/drs. thought) So it is not good to especially linger in getting treatment. The sooner you get medical help, the better. My question is this: Should one try to get all of the poison out i.e. by throwing up
and diarrhea; or should one nip it in the bud and
start taking anti-diarrhea meds, and etc. immediately. I believe that it is very serious when bile (yellow) starts because I think that is way too long to go without help especially in little ones and in the elderly or someone with a suppressed immunity.
Perhaps on a little different note, is the fact that a lot of my friends leave food out on the corner for hours and hours and then they do not understand why they get sick at the stomach. Mayonaisse products and chicken and eggs and other products such as this should be be left out for a very long time. I do not leave it out for more than 20 minutes or so. But so many of my friends do not refrigerate food after they are finished eating. I have asked them, should not that be put in th frig. Oh no it is OK they state back to me. I think a lot of times we be free of food poisoning and stomach sickness by being really careful in the refrigeration of the foods that need to be at a very low temp. And to be careful that you do not get salmonella is to check eggs to see that they are not cracked when you buy them and that they are not bloody or some other type defect on them. That would help. And to wash and clean fruit and veggies would help as well. I have seen a lot of people in the grocery store just pick up a fruit and start to eat it right away. Especially ones with serious suppressed immunities can not do this at all just eat anything without washing it. These are a few of the things that were on my mind to express. Martha
